American Century Championship

One of the coolest golf tournaments takes place this coming weekend and if you haven’t seen it before, you should. The American Century Championship is a celebrity golf tourney played every July at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. This isn’t a PGA tournament nor have any active professional golfers like Scottie or Rory playing…but it does bring the star power.

The weekend features all sorts of entertainment such as a long drive challenge, hole in one contest, live music, and more. You’ll probably even see someone hit their tee shot, then get tossed a basketball to shoot at a hoop set up on the beach. It might sound like an unorganized frat party at times, but in reality its just an all out good time.

There is prize money for the winner ($125,000 out $600,000 total prize money), as well as a trophy presentation – so it does have the structure that you want to see in a tournament so people actually play for real, just with a more relaxed attitude. It is a 54 hole event, and uses a modified Stableford scoring system since 2004 – meaning it awards points based on a player’s score relative to par on each hole, as well as the potentially lose points if you play it poorly.

Every year you see the beaches of the lake covered with boats and people, all there to have a great time, while countless celebrities and athletes compete and interact with the crowds. As a golf fan, I can’t get enough of way the course looks. Pristine greens, beautiful backdrops with the mountains and the lake, and just nothing but green landscape.

There are too many famous names to list here, but this year includes Josh Allen, Davante Adams, Charles Barkley, Joe Buck, Vince Carter, Stephen Curry, the Kelce brothers, Jerry Rice, Tony Romo…you know what, just google who’s playing because there’s a lot.

Be sure to check it out! Practice rounds start tomorrow, long drive and hole-in-one contest Thursday and Friday, and the final 2 rounds wrap up the tourney this weekend.
