Welcome back! As mentioned in last week’s post this one is geared towards tips for your irons. And remember these are pointers we’ve picked up that is meant to help your swing, but any permanent changes you are looking to make need to be with a professional instructor!
It’s always fun to hit a bomb off the tee, but your irons are what you’ll be using for the majority of your shots. Whether it’s a 5 iron or a wedge, the philosophy is the same. Go ahead and check out the tips below and apply them, and let us know what you think. These have been extremely helpful for me, especially since the majority of what we have read on other websites and blogs seem to give very poor advice and are not very clear.
- HIPS HIPS HIPS!
Yep, just like hitting your woods it’s extremely important to have rotation!
- Weight on front foot
Unlike your driver, for irons you want your weight on your front foot. When starting out go ahead and really lean on that front foot, its more so to prevent rocking and keep you centered throughout your swing, so go ahead and go overboard for a few practice swings to get the feel.
- Point club away from body
Also just like your driver and woods, you want a larger swing plane, so act like you are pointing the club directly away from you on your back swing, and let the club do the work for you!
- Follow through and end on heels
Don’t swing out of your shoes, just make sure you finish your swing (depending on how far you are from where you want to hit – a wedge shot does not need as much of a follow through as a 7 iron). Ending on your heels can help give you maximum distance, but don’t stress on it until you get really comfortable with your swing and aren’t developing any bad habits.
- If continuously slicing or hooking shots, don’t full swing and get your feel back
If you can’t seem to hit the ball straight, just take a deep breath, and slow your swing down. Give the next shot a 60-70% swing, which will help you control it more. After a few non-full swings you should be able to get your feel back and start hitting more consistent straight iron shots.
There are plenty more tips and a lot more information to learn, but these should at least help you build some basics along with your confidence.
